Writers Studio Help

Get back to writing.

Short, task-led guides for the workflows that should never require guesswork.

Editor & Formatting

  1. Open a draft from Library or create one with New Document.
  2. Select text, then use the formatting bar for emphasis, paragraph styles, alignment, lists, font size, and imported-text cleanup.
  3. Hover any icon in the formatting bar to see its name. Use Find & Replace from the editor toolbar when revising.

Chapters & Page Breaks

  1. Place the cursor where the next page should begin, then choose Format → Insert Page Break or press Shift-Command-Return.
  2. The following text begins on a new full-size page. The break is structural and is not printed as prose.
  3. To remove one, place the cursor beside its separator and choose Format → Remove Page Break. Standard Manuscript Format also adds structural breaks before detected chapter headings.

Organize with Writer’s Studio

  1. Open Characters, Timeline, Relationships, or Worldbuilding from the sidebar with a draft selected.
  2. Create only the records you want to track; the manuscript remains your source text and Writer’s Studio data stays connected to its workspace.
  3. Use the same workspace to keep facts, events, places, and relationships available for continuity review and optional AI context.

Proofing & Revision

  1. Open Proofing in the editor to review spelling and grammar findings without changing the manuscript automatically.
  2. Choose a suggested replacement or ignore an issue. Use Next and Previous Issue to move through the current results.
  3. Use Read Aloud from the editor toolbar when hearing the draft is more useful than scanning it.

AI Setup

  1. You can write, organize, proof, and export without AI. Configure it later from Settings if you want it.
  2. Direct for Mac supports your own provider key and local Ollama. The Mac App Store edition uses its in-app hosted-AI allowances and subscription options.
  3. Use the AI panel only when you want help; review every proposal before applying it to your draft.

Import, Save & Export

  1. Import DOCX, RTF, HTML, Markdown, or text from the Library. Save preserves the document’s active format where supported.
  2. Export PDF for a fixed-layout review, DOCX for Word-compatible handoff, or EPUB for reflowable ebook reading. Manual page breaks are retained in PDF, DOCX, and EPUB exports.
  3. For submissions, use Apply Standard Manuscript Format and Export Submission DOCX, then review the recipient’s current requirements before sending.
